Golden years: 7 and over
Once your dog enters their golden years, usually classed as 7 years and above, they will require a different care routine to their younger counterparts – discover how we can help below.
Health monitoring
As your dog gets older it is worth booking regular appointments with your dog’s favourite vet at Nurture. They will complete a thorough examination and may choose to perform tests to help diagnose any health conditions your dog might be suffering with.
Behavioural changes are often tell-tale signs that your ageing companion has a health issue that needs addressing. You can help your dog by letting us know about any changes in their eating, drinking & toileting habits, plus their mood & willingness to exercise.
Ageing conditions
As dogs age, they can become more prone to conditions such as diabetes, arthritis, and heart disease. Our experienced vets will work with you to create the optimal treatment plan, which may include recommending changes to your dog’s environment and routine.
Annual booster vaccinations
Even older dogs needs a boost when it comes to protection against nasty infectious diseases including:
- Parvovirus
- Canine distemper
- Leptospirosis
- Hepatitis
- Kennel cough
Talk to your vet about the best vaccination schedule for your older dog.
Parasite prevention
Keeping up with parasite prevention is vital as any associated health issues can have a big impact on older dogs. Nurture can design the best combination of flea, worm & tick products for your dog and your household.
Oral care from our Vet Dentists
Regular brushing is still the best protection for dogs over 7, however, dental disease is common in older dogs and can wreak havoc on their health & wellbeing. Look out for exceptionally smelly breath, discoloured or broken teeth, or red/bleeding gums.
Our vet dentists are always on hand to provide a consult and offer treatment advice on how to keep your dog’s oral health under control during their golden years.
Nutrition, exercise & enrichment
Although your dog may slow down in their golden years, they can still lead a fulfilling life with the right care.
Older dogs will require nutritional changes to support their current and future wellbeing. Often their exercise levels reduce so they may not need as many calories, however their protein levels may need to increase. Nurture can help you adjust your dog’s meal and exercise plan, and recommend the best diet for your dog now they are over 7.
Nurture can also share dog enrichment tips for older dogs with you, including toys, treats and adventures to suit their needs.
Surgery & procedures
Booking your older dog in for surgery or a procedure can feel daunting. You can rest assured that your dog’s wellbeing is our priority and they will be cared for by our highly skilled and compassionate team.
Before we book any procedure, we will see you and your dog for a consultation. This is where we can run through the surgical procedure, how they will be cared for, what aftercare they will need, and a perform a thorough examination, including a blood test if required, to ensure your dog has no underlying health conditions that could affect their recovery.
