Nurturing your adult cat
Choosing Nurture really is the greatest decision for cat owners in Somerset – your cat will thank you! Part of helping pets to live well includes tailoring the care we offer to suit their life stage as well as their individual needs. Take a look below at how we can help your adult cat live their best life with you.
Nurture are accredited Cat Friendly Clinics, meaning that our Practices can be a home away from home for felines, providing them with veterinary care in a nourishing environment. This includes our in-patient care. Take a look at our unique wellbeing cattery in Wells.
We are passionate about our feline friendly credentials and we even have a team of cat advocates who meet regularly to assess how well we are serving our feline friends and how we can be ever better – meet our cat-loving team.
Adulthood: 1 – 10 years
Once your cat turns one, they will require care that is suited to their developing adult lifestyle, whether they are going to stay indoors or become an outdoor explorer.
Health checks
Regularly seeing our cat vets and nurses in Wells or Weston throughout their lifetime will help to identify any health conditions early and prolong your cat’s quality of life. Our team will give them a nose-to tail examination, discuss your cat’s indoor or outdoor lifestyle and any worries you may have. Talk to our team about the best health-check schedule for your cat.
Annual cat vaccinations
Keeping your cat up to date with their annual vaccinations will help to keep harmful diseases at bay through their adult life, including:
- Cat flu (feline herpes virus and feline calicivirus)
- Feline infectious enteritis
- Feline leukaemia virus
Parasite prevention
Nurture is passionate about people protecting their pets & families by using parasite prevention. Not only can parasites cause infection, disease and discomfort, they can also infest your home or affect those with a weakened immune system. Following Nurture’s veterinary guidance with suitable parasitic treatment products for cats, like wormers and flea treatments, will protect your cat and also your human family.
**Compulsory cat microchipping**
As of June 10th 2024, it is now a legal requirement to microchip all cats in England over 20 weeks of age – learn more about this new law.
A microchip provides the best chance of you being reunited with your cat should they get stolen or become lost or injured, and can be implanted during a consultation or procedure at Nurture – book now.
Cat neutering & surgery
Neutering your adult cat is a responsible choice for their health & wellbeing, and to prevent unwanted litters.
Before we book any neutering or other procedure, we will see you and your cat for a consultation. This is where we can run through the surgical procedure, and the care your cat will benefit from before, during, and after. At Nurture we offer pre-op blood tests to check there are no underlying health conditions that could affect your beloved companion’s recovery.
We also have a unique wellbeing cattery at Wells – discover why it’s so special
Nutrition
Our cat-loving team will help you achieve a balanced plan for your cat’s nutritional needs. It’s important to talk to your vet before changing your cat’s diet as some changes can have a negative impact on their health.
Oral care from our Vet Dentists
Dental disease affects so many of the cats we see; a proactive approach to your feline’s dental health at home will help to reduce the symptoms and risks associated with the disease. Book an appointment with our vet dentists in Wells or Weston-super-Mare for more advice.
Should your cat require any dental work, Nurture has vet dentists on site who can offer a routine scale & polish, as well as more complex dental treatments.
Advice on routine & behaviour
Now your cat has matured, you will understand their personality more. Nurture encourages owners to stick to a routine for daily care and use their playtime and exercise to appeal to their cat’s natural behaviours. Think hunting, climbing, scratching – any toys or time you can dedicate to this will benefit your cat’s wellbeing.
If you have any concerns about your cat’s behaviour, for example if certain behaviours are affecting their health or your home life, book a health check with our experienced team. Cats are known to hide symptoms when they are unwell; our vets will give them a thorough health check to find out if illness could be the cause of their behavioural issues, and offer advice to help your pet at home.
Our nurturing team can also offer advice on how to set up your home, and introduce new members, for a peaceful multi-cat household.
